Short lease for expats: flexible driving after arrival

In your first months in the Netherlands a lot is still uncertain: where you will live, your job or how long you will stay. Short lease gives you a car without a long commitment.

What is short lease?

Short lease is operational lease with a short term, often from one month to about a year. The car, insurance and maintenance are included in the monthly payment. More in short lease.

Why it suits expats

  • you are mobile quickly after arrival;
  • you do not commit for years yet;
  • you can switch to a longer contract later;
  • you do not need to import your own car.

What are the downsides?

The monthly payment is higher than with a long contract, because the lease company has to re-lease the car sooner. The choice of models is also often more limited. If you know you will stay several years, a regular contract is usually cheaper.

Moving on afterwards

Many expats start with short lease and choose a longer operational lease after a few months. By then you know better how much you drive and what kind of car you need.
