Equipment lease for expat entrepreneurs

If you are starting or growing a business in the Netherlands as an expat, you often need business assets. With equipment lease you spread that investment over the term.

How does equipment lease work?

With equipment lease, a lease company finances a business asset such as a machine, forklift or fixtures. You pay in instalments and use the asset in your business straight away. Read the basics in what is equipment lease.

What do you need as an expat?

The requirements are the same as for Dutch entrepreneurs: a KvK registration, a business bank account and insight into your figures. If you have no Dutch history yet, the lender looks more closely at your turnover and order book.

What can you lease?

Almost any business asset that holds its own value, such as machinery, construction equipment, kitchens, till systems or trailers. See the options for equipment lease.

The tax side

With financial lease of a business asset you are the economic owner. You depreciate it and may be able to use the small-scale investment allowance. Ask your accountant what applies in your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lease used machinery?

Often yes, as long as the asset still has sufficient value and service life.

Do I need to make a down payment?

Not always, but a down payment can help if your business is still young.

Does this also apply to a sole proprietorship?

Yes, a sole proprietorship registered with the KvK can also use equipment lease.
