Operational Lease
Operational lease for expats in the Netherlands
Updated

For many expats, operational lease is a straightforward way to drive. You pay one fixed monthly amount and the lease company takes care of the rest.
What is included in the monthly payment?
With operational lease the lease company remains the owner. The monthly payment usually covers the car, maintenance, tyres, insurance, road tax and roadside assistance. That is convenient if you do not yet know Dutch garages and insurers.

Through your employer or your own business
Many expats drive a lease car provided by their employer. The arrangements are then set out in the company's car policy. If you run your own business, you sign the contract yourself. See operational lease for entrepreneurs.
Term and leaving the country
An operational lease contract often runs for several years. If you leave the Netherlands early, you usually pay an early termination fee. So choose the term based on how long you expect to stay, or ask for a contract with a flexible notice arrangement.
What to look out for
- annual mileage, including trips to your home country;
- whether driving abroad is allowed;
- the excess in case of damage;
- the conditions for ending early.
